storing online sales inventory in a storage unit

One of my favorite life ventures has been selling on the online auction websites. Since I always need something to sell, I am always out shopping for great finds. When I find things, I need a place to keep them until I can get them sold. This is where the problems arose. I had all kinds of inventory to sell, but I had nowhere to store it in my home. A friend of mine suggested that I rent a storage unit for my inventory and I did just that. My blog contains tips for protecting and organizing inventory in a small storage unit.

How To Simplify And Organize Self-Storage Space

Jessica Franklin

Self-storage is a perfect option to increase the usable square footage in your home. When clutter, decor, tools, clothes, or knick-knacks are transported to a unit, it's also a great opportunity to better organize the overflow. This improves ease of access for future retrieval from the unit and can also help if items are eventually purged. Unique organizational solutions can help you maximize a storage unit like a pro, and strategic options like shelving and bins on wheels also make loading and unloading easier.

Getting started

After renting a self-storage facility, be deliberate in segmenting household items for relocation. While it may be tempting to haphazardly move things that are more in the way, you need to consider your frequency of use, accessibility, and durability as primary decision drivers. For example, if a storage unit is not near your home, there is an added inconvenience factor for driving to the facility for routine needs, such as tools. Similarly, if the unit is not climate controlled, it may not be the best option for sensitive items.

Archiving and labeling

After planning the best options to move for maximizing your interior and exterior space at home, it's time to consider archiving. Premium storage facilities often feature unique amenities like cataloging your personal possessions as a crew adds them to a storage unit. When you are using self-storage, it's easy to recreate this process by photographing items as they are secured and jotting a note about where the items are stored in the unit, particularly when a large number of items are being relocated. When packing up the unit is completed, these notes can be printed out and posted within the unit to ensure anyone accessing the unit on your behalf is able to pull exactly what you need.

When loading the unit, it can be handy to group like items, such as tools or lawn decor, into sections within the space. Clearly label boxed items based on category and, when possible, add a few descriptive notes if several items are sharing a space. Using clear bins can further simplify this process by providing additional visibility.

Storage solutions

Unique packing solutions like boxes with partitions help better layer delicate items and provide an easy visual review when pulling individual pieces. When a volume of smaller goods are being stored, such as crafting supplies, small tools, or inventory for a home business, using a cart of stacked metal bins provides easy access and allows for convenient labeling. Rolling shelving is also a handy solution for transporting a large group of items in and out of a unit at one time. For example, holiday decor may be removed all at once by wheeling it out and back to the house for seasonal decoration.

Additional tools that can assist with loading and unloading, include a dolly, rolling furniture movers, and other wheeled carts. Consider leaving at least a dolly inside the unit and keeping one at home if frequent moves of heavier items are required. Reach out to a local service such as StorSafe Storage, to learn more.
