Putting Oil Paintings In Storage? 4 Tips To Keep Them Safe

If you have oil paintings that you need to put in storage, you need to make sure you store them properly. If you do not, they will be damaged when you take them out, and this is the last thing you want to happen. Follow the tips below so your paintings will be in perfect condition when you take them out of storage.
Dust and Debris
Dust and debris can damage your oil paintings. This is because they are abrasive. If they settle on the painting, they will cause scratches and chipped paint. To keep the dust off, wrap the oil paintings in brown paper, and then wrap them in bubble wrap over the paper. You need to put frame corners on all four corners. When you are finished, put the paintings in a solid box, and tape the box up so it is completely sealed. If you have oil paintings in no frame, put them in plastic sleeves with acid-free cardboard, and then put them in the same type of box. This will make sure the painting will stay free of dust and debris, and they will not bend while in storage.
Sunlight
If the sun comes through the storage unit, the oil paintings will have discolorations and uneven colors. Go to the storage unit on a sunny day and see if the sun shines in, and if so, see where it shines. This will allow you to put the oil paintings in an area that gets no sun. You can also have the paintings framed with UV-protected glass along with spacers.
Humidity and Temperature
If your storage unit has high humidity and at a high temperature, it will cause mold and mildew to get on the paintings. To prevent this from happening, make sure the storage unit you have is climate- and temperature-controlled before you rent the unit. The owner can tell you exactly what the climate and temperature is inside the units. The humidity should be around 60% and the temperature should be approximately 65 degrees.
Insects
Make sure the storage unit has no insects, as insect droppings have acids that will damage the oil paint. There are also insects that will eat the canvas and frames, such as moths and wood lice. If you are concerned about this, have the storage unit sprayed by a pest control company to prevent this from happening before you put the paintings inside it.
