storing online sales inventory in a storage unit

One of my favorite life ventures has been selling on the online auction websites. Since I always need something to sell, I am always out shopping for great finds. When I find things, I need a place to keep them until I can get them sold. This is where the problems arose. I had all kinds of inventory to sell, but I had nowhere to store it in my home. A friend of mine suggested that I rent a storage unit for my inventory and I did just that. My blog contains tips for protecting and organizing inventory in a small storage unit.

5 Tips For Storing Furniture In A Storage Unit

Jessica Franklin

If you just moved into a smaller apartment or are temporarily living with a family member, you may not have room for all of your furniture. However, that does not mean you have to give it away. You can always put your furniture in a storage unit until you have room for it again. However, you must store your furniture the correct way to prevent damage. Here are five helpful tips for storing furniture in a storage unit:

Give It a Thorough Cleaning

It is a good idea to clean your furniture before putting it away in a storage unit. After you have removed the dust from your furniture with a clean cloth, apply a furniture cleaner to it and wipe it down with a dry rag. Let the furniture dry completely.

Break the Furniture Down

If you have more than a couple pieces of furniture to put away, you may wonder if there will be enough room or not. The best way to save space in a storage unit is to disassemble your furniture beforehand. If your furniture pieces can be taken apart, put the nuts, screws, legs and other pieces in a plastic bag.

Protect Your Furniture With Paper Padding

Furniture can get damaged in a storage unit, so it is important to protect it with paper padding. If you wrap this padding around your furniture, it will prevent nicks and scratches. After you have tightly wrapped the furniture, secure the padding with packing tape.

Put Plastic on the Flooring

If the storage unit is not climate controlled, moisture can seep in more easily, damaging your furniture. An easy solution for this problem is to cover the flooring of the storage unit with plastic sheeting. This sheeting will act as a moisture barrier.

Leave Space Between Furniture Pieces

When storing your furniture, you may be tempted to cram as much furniture as possible in the unit. However, if you do not leave any room between the furniture pieces, they can get scratched and will not get proper airflow. Make sure to leave at least a few inches between your furniture pieces. If there is not enough room, you may need to upgrade to a bigger storage unit.

If you follow these helpful tips, your furniture will stay in good shape in the storage unit. When you come to retrieve your furniture, it will look as good as new.
