storing online sales inventory in a storage unit

One of my favorite life ventures has been selling on the online auction websites. Since I always need something to sell, I am always out shopping for great finds. When I find things, I need a place to keep them until I can get them sold. This is where the problems arose. I had all kinds of inventory to sell, but I had nowhere to store it in my home. A friend of mine suggested that I rent a storage unit for my inventory and I did just that. My blog contains tips for protecting and organizing inventory in a small storage unit.

Tips On Organizing Your Storage Unit To Make Retrieving Items A Breeze

Jessica Franklin

Renting a storage unit provides you with additional square footage in which you store your unneeded possessions, but it's important to avoid allowing this extra space to get cluttered. A disorganized storage unit will make you discouraged to visit, and pretty soon you might find yourself going months between trips to the storage facility. A better strategy is to spend enough time organizing the storage unit as you load it with your items. Doing so will make future visits a breeze and allow you to find exactly what you need in a matter of minutes. Here are steps toward achieving this goal.

Pack Your Boxes Systematically

Instead of hurriedly loading your boxes in anticipation of their trip to your storage unit, take a systematic approach. The first step is to assign each box a number, write the number on several sides of the box in permanent marker and then write the number in a notebook. As you load the box, meticulously itemize everything in your notebook. Through this approach, when you need to retrieve something at a later date, doing so will be as simple as finding the item in the notebook and then visiting the storage unit to find the box that holds it.

Remember Mobility As You Load The Unit

Meticulously organized boxes won't have much benefit to you if you can't access them once they're inside your storage unit. Although there are many strategies to keeping your unit properly organized, an ideal approach is to stack the boxes against the three walls of the unit so that their numbers are clearly visible. Instead of placing additional items against these boxes, leave a path wide enough for you to walk during future visits to the unit. Then, place your additional boxes and larger items, such as furniture, in the middle of the space.

Track The Location Of Your Boxes

It's not necessarily practical to try to place your boxes in the storage unit in numerical order, given that different sizes of boxes won't necessarily be conducive to stacking together. Instead, carry your notebook with you and map the approximate location of each box to help you stay organized for future visits. For example, you could draw a rough sketch of your unit and write the numbers of the boxes where they're located." These simple instructions will help you find your desired box quickly and efficiently when you visit the storage unit in the future.
